Abstract:
Edge computing workloads are rapidly increasing in both size and complexity, frequently outpacing advances in next-generation accelerator chips. To address these evolving computational demands, we investigate modular architectures and chiplet-based system designs. In this presentation, I will share results from two recent research projects: EVA and Arvon. EVA is a coarse-grained reconfigurable accelerator tailored for adaptable edge computing applications. This heterogeneous system combines programmable processing array tiles, which boost performance and utilization, with RISC-V CPU tiles that manage control and support rapid reconfiguration at sub-microsecond timescales. An EVA test chip demonstrates high resource utilization along with competitive performance and efficiency across a range of workloads. To further enable scalability as workload requirements grow, the second project, Arvon, explores chiplet integration. In collaboration with Intel, we leverage the Embedded Multi-die Interconnect Bridge to integrate FPGA and DSP chiplets within a flexible multi-chip package. This approach allows systems to adapt and scale in response to changing workload demands over time. Together, these demonstrate practical strategies for addressing the evolving requirements of edge computing.
